Genesis Design & Media
Genesis Design & Media was a small advertising agency in Fairbanks, Alaska. As their web designer and web developer I created their website as well as websites for two of their clients:
View Site »I worked full-time with Genesis Design & Media for half a year until I moved back to Bellingham, Washington, where I continued to work for them part-time remote until they went out of business. Nothing of my doing, of course. In fact, the owner still employs me for freelance projects.
I started as a PHP/MySQL and XHTML/CSS developer and I worked with a graphic designer who did mockups in Adobe Illustrator to create the genesisdm.com site (currently at genesisdm.com/p). After a couple of PHP projects, I started to learn Ruby on Rails, and after learning how much faster I can develop in the Ruby on Rails environment, I was hooked.
At Genesis Design & Media I worked independently as well as with a graphic designer. I converted Illustrator mock-ups as well as Template Monster® templates into semantic XHTML/CSS. I also became very competent with javascript effect libraries such as mootools and script.aculo.us. The site also has AJAXified random “morsels” that show up in the top left corner of the screen. View the site to see them in action.
The graphic designer and I were happy with the design, but the boss preferred flash. I created a simple and temporary flash page to take the place of the PHP/XHTML design, which gave me an opportunity to learn a little bit more about flash.
